Plastering yourself: here's how to do it

You can do plastering yourself, as long as you’re well prepared. Don’t expect a masterpiece on your first day, but with patience you’ll get far.

What you’ll need:

  • Bucket + mixer
  • Plastering trowel and straightedge
  • Masking materials
  • Plastering mortar (gypsum or cement, depending on the space)
  • Primer

Step-by-step guide:

  1. Prepare
    • Masking the floors and window frames.
    • Clean the walls and prime them.
  2. Mixing the plaster
    • Follow the instructions on the packaging carefully: too dry or too wet won’t work well.
  3. Applying first layer
    • Start at the bottom and work your way up in strips.
    • Apply an even layer of about 5–8 mm.
  4. Leveling
    • Use a straightedge to level the surface.
    • Fill holes immediately.
  5. Trimming
    • Once it has slightly set, smooth it with the trowel.
  6. Drying and touch-ups
    • Optionally sand lightly for a paint-ready finish.

Pro-tip: Work in sections that aren’t too large; plaster dries quickly.
