Installing plasterboards: less risk of cracks

Cracks in plasterboard joints often occur due to incorrect installation or movement in the structure. These tips will help you reduce the risk:

  1. Use the right frame
    • Mount onto a stable wooden or metal framework.
    • Place studs every 30–40 cm for extra stability.
  1. Do not place joints above door and window corners
    • Stagger the joints so they don’t line up with stress points.
  1. Use tapered edges
    • This allows the joint filler to fit better and creates a stronger bond.
  1. Position screws properly
    • Screw head just below the surface, but not through the cardboard.
    • Center-to-center distance: approx. 25 cm on boards, approx. 17 cm on edges.
  1. Jointing and reinforcing
    • Use joint filler and reinforcement tape (paper or fiberglass) for the seams.
    • Finish in at least two layers, sanding in between.

Extra tip: Let the structure acclimatize to room temperature before finishing, to minimize movement caused by temperature differences.
